May 5, 2004 - The Barrick team placed 1st in the BioMarine benchman competition, and 3rd in the first aid competition.  Members consist of Mike Haworth (Mine Rescue Training Coordinator), Gerry Goodale (fresh air base), Jason Mayne (captain), Kenny Groves (gasman), Carlos Cuervas (mapman), Shane Sandbak, (first aidman), Freddy De La Paz (co-captain), Joe Martinez, Jr. (alternate &. gasman), Rod Christensen (benchman), Mike Campbell (benchman).  (pictured is the Barrick competition team)

Barrick Goldstrike hosted a two day Mutual aid mine rescue field exercise on 6/10-11/04.  This is the first time multiple teams took part in an exercise like this in this area.  Seven Teams from area mines took place the first day, and six teams took part the second day.  (pictured is Jake Campbell)

Area mines that participated were Newmont’s Deepstar & Deep Post teams, Newmont’s Midas teams, and Queensland (formerly Anglo gold) mine rescue team.  All Barrick Goldstrike Meikle mine rescue teams and Getchell Gold mine rescue team are owned by Placer Dome & Newmont Gold.  MSHA visited this facility, which is the University of Nevada-Reno Fire Science Academy located at Carlin, Nevada for the purpose of evaluating the feasibility of making a western mine rescue simulator at this facility.  (pictured are Barrick and Newmont team members)
